Projects & Partners

Capacitar has grown through the efforts of many people who share a global commitment to healing and transformation. Capacitar's work focuses on grassroots groups, especially women and families, who suffer the effects of war, violence and poverty, and who desire to heal themselves, their communities and societies.

Capacitar has offered workshops in eighteen states of the United States: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the territory of Puerto Rico.

Internationally, Training programs have been held in Canada (Toronto, Winnipeg and Victoria); Mexico (Chiapas, Tobasco, Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez); in Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) in the Caribbean (Belize, Haiti and Dominican Republic); in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Peru); in Asia (East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Sri Lanka); in the Middle East (Israel and Palestine); in Europe (Ireland, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland); in Eastern Africa (Kenya and Tanzania); Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho); West Africa (Nigeria and Sierra Leone); and Great Lakes Region (Rwanda and Burundi).

In 1995, in recognition of its direct service to healing and empowering women, Capacitar coordinated the Healing Tent at the NGO World Forum on Women in China in collaboration with the Chinese Medical and Traditional Medical Associations. Capacitar also coordinated the Healing Tents for the VI and VII International Feminist Congresses of Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1998, 2000, and 2002 Capacitar held Central American Regional Conferences for teams from Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Chiapas, Mexico and El Salvador. The first National Capacitar Conference for the United States was held July 9-11, 2004 at the University of San Diego, San Diego, California.

In 2005 a first gathering of Capacitar team leaders from different countries  was held in Oakland at Holy Names University in connection with the Sophia Center Conference on Cosmology of Healing.  In July 2008 the first Capacitar Global Conference was convened at La Casa de Maria in Santa Barbara with 85 men and women representing Capacitar teams in 20 countries.  The conference celebrated the 20th anniversary of Capacitar.
