Capacitar: A Brief History

California and Western US

California - Northern and Central California -

Santa Cruz County

Capacitar started work in Watsonville labor camps in 1992 in collaboration with the Holy Names Sisters. From 1994-2005 trainings were offered for Head Start parents, staffs, and family advocates in Santa Cruz County. In 2002, a pilot program was developed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, with UCSC funding an intern who facilitated workshops of Capacitar practices on campus for students.

San Francisco and Bay Area

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Capacitar trainers have worked with retreat centers, homeless shelters, recovery programs, schools, women and men in prison, youth at risk, refugees and the Women's Health Leadership program. Retreat days and programs are offered at Presentation Center, Los Gatos; Sophia Center, and Holy Names College, Oakland. In depth trainings have been facilitated by Mary Litell, OSF, and sponsored and St. Anthony’s Foundation and Network Ministries in the Tenderloin, San Francisco.

Since 2003 yearly in depth trainings have been offered at La Casa de Maria in Santa Barbara, coordinated by Juliet Spohn Twomey.  Ongoing Dias de Retiro led by LCDM staff feature Capacitar practices.  In 2006 Alcohol Drug Mental Health Services sponsored a training for 27 counselors, therapists and members of staff working in centers throughout Santa Barbara County.

The 20th Anniversary Global Conference was hosted at La Casa de Maria in July 2008, with 85 men and women from 20 countries.  The 25th Anniversary Conference was held at LCDM September 6-8, 2013.

Los Angeles County

Since 2008 the Presentation Learning Center in Watts has sponsored workshops and trainings, incorporating Capacitar practices in their ongoing community programs.  An in depth training at San Miguel Parish, facilitated by Pat Cane and Joan Condon, was offered in 2010-2011.

The Office of Restorative Justice for the Diocese of Los Angeles sponsored two Capacitar retreats coordinated by Fr. George Horan and Rita Chairez for staff and chaplains who work in jails, youth detention camps and detention centers in Southern California.  Capacitar practices are regularly used by staff and chaplains for self care, for outreach to prisoners, victims groups and youth.
