Capacitar: A Brief History

Southwest and US/Mexico Border

Texas

Capacitar en la Frontera

The Capacitar en la Frontera team currently coordinators workshops and trainings in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez for community groups, detention centers, women’s groups and refugee centers. New trainings are scheduled in El Paso and Juarez in 2014-2015 at Centro San Vicente. A pilot Capacitar program has been offered in the El Paso Detention Center for refugee detainees, and a new pilot has been developed for the jails of El Paso. New outreach in 2014 will include trainings in Chihuahua, and workshops in Nogales and Tijuana as well as other border communities impacted by violence.

The first Capacitar bi-lingual workshops in Texas were sponsored by Mercy Sisters and a federal health grant in 1996-1997 for participants and health promoters from Laredo, Laredo, MX, and surrounding colonias. In 2000-2001 workshops were offered for participants from El Paso, Ciudad Juarez and the surrounding border areas. Denise Sausville, RSM, has offered programs in the Reynoso MX-McAllen TX border area and in the Brownsville TX-Matamoros, MX area, where a group of grassroots leaders trained in Capacitar share the practices. In 2003-2004, trainings were offered for border health promoters under the auspices of Familia Bienestar in El Paso, Candlelighters, and the Cancer Consortium of El Paso. A Spanish CancerManual was developed. Workshops were again offered in 2006 in El Paso coordinated by Centro Mujeres Esperanza, leading to in depth trainings for2009, 2010.

Arizona

In 2003, Capacitar was sponsored by Border Links in Tucson to train health care promoters and leaders working with local communities at the border between Arizona and Nogales, Mexico.  In 2014 a Capaciitar retreat will be offered to HEPAC (Hogar de Esperanza y Paz) in Nogales, as well as a retreat for migrant communities in the Tucson area.
