Capacitar: A Brief History
Destruction and killings followed the East Timorese vote for independence from Indonesia in 1999. In 2001, María Días of PAS clinic invited Capacitar International to begin work to help people deal with the trauma of 1999, 25 years of Indonesian rule and 300 years of colonial subjugation. Early workshops for orphans, refugees and families resulted in a trained Capacitar team at Timor Aid, a Timorese NGO. They shared Capacitar practices in workshops throughout the country, especially with teachers. The Capacitar International team returned yearly to give national trainings to workshop participants.
