Capacitar: A Brief History
First workshops led by Mary Litell, OSF, were offered in Nairobi (2002, 2003) under the auspices of Jesuit Refugee Services for JRS staff and refugees from 5 countries living in Kakuma Camp. Other work included workshops at the Maryknoll Center House in Nairobi, outreach in Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi, and an in depth training in Arusha (2005). Aine Campbell RSM, clinical psychologist from Belfast, currently leads Capacitar workshops at Mater Hospital in Nairobi for caregivers and those affected by HIV/AIDS and trauma. Trauma connected to war and displacement, political and domestic violence, impoverishment, corruption, as well as HIV/AIDS, are priorities for continued Capacitar work in Kenya.
