Capacitar: A Brief History

In February 2003, in collaboration with the Haiti Medical Mission of Wisconsin, Capacitar led wellness workshops in Thiotte for people waiting to see doctors and medical professionals for surgery, medical and dental care. With Daniel Massillon, Pat Cane wrote and published a Haitian Creole Manual of basic Capacitar practices.

In January 2010 a powerful earthquake caused massive destruction and loss of life in Haiti leaving  thousands homeless, hurt and traumatized. This in a country where the majority of the population already struggled to meet their basic needs.

In October 2011, Capacitar trainer Joan Condon gave short workshops or had meetings with 14 groups comprised of people from a variety of organizatons to present the Capacitar program. The feedback was that the Capacitar trauma healing program would be helpful to healing trauma in Haiti.

In May 2013, Capacitar trainer Joan Condon complted the three module Trauma Healing and Transformation program in collaboration with partner organizaitons CRAD and ODELPA. Each group of approximately 30 people included teachers, health workers and grassroots leadership of organizations that work with youth, women, agricultural workers and  students.  In March 2014, the Trauma Healing and Transformation program began for a group of 18 young people in collaboration with the Episcopal parish Notre Dame of the Annunciation in Martissant. A two-day additional formation training was given to 20 women in collaboration with ODELPA.

As part of this work more additional Capacitar materials are being translated into Haitian Creole.
